Oprah Winfrey was born into poverty to a teenage single mother. She was raped at age nine and became pregnant at 14.

Sylvester Stallone was born through the use of forceps that accidentally severed a nerve and caused paralysis in the lower left side of his face, including parts of his lip, tongue, and chin.

Frederick Douglass was born into slavery, violence, and separation from his parents.

Albert Einstein didn’t speak at all for the first three years of his life and many of his teachers assumed he was lazy because he was always distracted by abstract concepts. He couldn't get a job in physics for two years after graduation. Worked as assistant patent examiner, passed over for promotion until he "fully mastered machine technology".

Jim Carrey dropped out of school when he was fifteen, to support his family. Soon after, he and his family were living in a van. Despite these challenges, he continued to follow his dream of becoming a comedian.

Michael Jordan was cut from the varsity basketball team in his sophomore year.

Viktor Frankl was imprisoned at several concentration camps by Nazis, including Auschwitz. His wife and family were killed by the Nazis.

Thomas Alba Edison was fired from his job, when a chemical experiment leaked acid on to his boss’ desk. However, despite being almost penniless, Edison rose to be the most prolific inventor of his generation. He failed more than 1,000 times before he invented the light bulb. Instead of quitting, however, Edison tried and tried again until he achieved success.

Benjamin Franklin was ten-years-old, when his parents could no longer afford to send him to school. However, that didn’t stop him from pursuing an education. Through reading, he was able to educate himself, and the fruits of his knowledge include the lightning rod and bifocals and a successful political career.

Bethany Hamilton was just thirteen years old, when she had her left arm bitten off by a shark during a surfing accident. Instead of admitting defeat, she went back to her surfboard one month later and continued to practice. Two years later, she was able to win first place in the Explorer Women’s Division of the NSSA National Championships.

Walt Disney was fired from his first job at the Kansas City Star after his newspaper editor told him that he didn’t have enough imagination or creativity. A few years later, he drove Disney’s animation studio, Laugh-O-Gram, into bankruptcy. Only when he moved to California to produce cartoons did his career ultimately take off.

Nelson Mandela worked very hard to train as a lawyer, despite the South African apartheid system making this very difficult for a black man. Against the odds Nelson Mandela was able to practice law, helping many black South Africans to survive in the apartheid system. When Nelson Mandela was sent to jail for his opposition to apartheid in the 1960s, there seemed no end in sight to the all-powerful apartheid system of South Africa. But, against the odds, Mandela played a critical role in bringing about the end of apartheid and the first truly democratic elections.

Helen Keller A became deaf-blind before her second birthday. Despite this debilitating disability, she learned to read and write, and became the first deaf-blind person to gain a bachelor degree. She campaigned on issues of social welfare, women’s suffrage, disability rights and impressed many with her force of personality.

Mahatma Gandhi was put into jail several times for his non-violent protests against the British domination of India. Militarily, India could not hope to defeat the British Empire, but through his policy of non-violence he awoke the spirit of fellow Indians and helped to create a climate for Indian Independence which came in 1947.

Rosa Parks could have easily been just another statistic in the American system of racial segregation. In the Deep South, black Americans were systematically discriminated against, but on one famous day in 1955, Rosa Parks made a stand and refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. Her brave action sparked a widespread boycott of buses in Montgomery, Alabama.

Marie Curie became one of the most important scientists of her generation, in an age where few women were able to be educated. Her discoveries enabled the development of modern radiation and X-Ray. She was one of the few people to receive a Nobel prize for both medicine and physics.

Olaudah Equiano was taken into slavery and transported to America when he was 11 years old. However, after obtaining his freedom he wrote a book ‘The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano‘ which played a pivotal role in turning public opinion in Britain against slavery. It was also well received for its literary merit.

Ludwig Van Beethoven lost his hearing and that is the greatest possible misfortune for a musician. Yet, despite the inevitable frustration, it didn’t stop him from composing some of the most sublime pieces of music in the history of man.

Abraham Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin. He taught himself to read and trained to become a lawyer. Despite numerous setbacks both personal and political, he was elected 16th President of the US from 1861-1865. In difficult circumstances Lincoln led the Union forces to victory preserving the United States and against vehement opposition passed a bill to abolish legal slavery.

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery, however she managed to escape and begin a new life. She returned on many dangerous missions to Maryland where she helped lead slaves to freedom. She also served as agent and leader during the Civil War. She became a symbol of the abolition movement.

Stephen Hawking has helped popularize scientific concepts and make ground-breaking discoveries, despite suffering from motor neuron disease.

You can only focus and concentrate on influencing the present, and by that I mean, “the now”. You can act now to change the trends you created in the past and also, you can act now, to improve your potential for success in the future. You must act now to build the life you want.

We all know that when an architect is going to create a construction, he makes drawings, calculations, plans, and finally makes a model, to see how the construction will look. By viewing the 3D model of the building, the Architect can assess whether there are things in the design that need to be improved, added, removed or changed. In other words, the model is the visualization of the future construction. While the Architect builds the model, he is visualizing the future construction and that visualization rekindles his creativity to perfect his project Finally, the Architect uses the model to sell or promote his project, because seeing the model produces emotions that are important to the success of the project by providing credibility and feelings of accomplishment.

Just as the Architect creates a model to visualize what he wants to build, you must also create a mental model to visualize what you want to achieve. When you visualize in your mind what you want to build in your life and you visualize it in 3 dimensions, like a video with audio, then the mental model will also produce emotions in you that are important for you to evaluate your project and be able to sell it to yourself. Not really selling, but you have to convince your subconscious mind that the goal of your project is good, makes you happy, is credible and you can accomplish it. You forge your goals and projects in your rational conscious mind, but you need the automatic responses of your subconscious mind not to sabotage your goal. The visualization of your mental model fulfills that function.

Visualizing your accomplished goal in your mind, like a model, communicates to your subconscious mind what you want to achieve and how that achievement makes you feel. Without feeling the emotion, your visualization is weak, because your subconscious mind does not understand rational communications, but emotional ones. You need to live in your mind the feelings and emotions produced by achieving your goal. Creating a mental model of what you want to achieve aligns your conscious mind with your subconscious and that Empowers you for Success.

Success Is Just A Bit Beyond

Once Desmond Tutu was talking about very big tasks, and said: “There is only one way to eat an elephant: one bite at a time.” That is a good image to bring to mind when we are facing overwhelming projects that may seem daunting, and even impossible. The lesson from the saying is that any task, no matter the size, can be accomplished gradually by doing just a little at a time.

A similar image is created by the concept: Baby Steps, that  are tentative actions which are the first stage in a long or challenging process. You can also refer to concepts like bit by bit, brick by brick, inch by inch. The key concept here is action, that refers to something done so as to accomplish an aim or a purpose. While inaction, is lack of action where some is expected or appropriate.

Most successes are due to action and most failures are due to inaction. You may have the Goal, the Strategy and the Plan, but without action you have nothing. Whether making a phone call, sending an email or physically maneuvering to achieve the next steps, take action. Execution will bring you one step closer to your desired outcome.

Whatever you do, just go forward.

I know many people that have great and very inspiring goals and they are always talking about their goals… year after year… and nothing happens. Defining your Goals is awesome, but that’s only the first step for success. Your Goals represent what you want to achieve, which defines where the finish line is and what Victory is. The question is: How are you going to reach your Goals? How will you get to the finish line? How will you achieve Victory?

You need to have a strategy to win, and by winning I mean achieving your goal. A sound strategy will successfully ignite your passion and move you forward. Start by dividing your Goal into smaller segments and phases, to simplify the process of thinking about how to get into action, to achieve what you want. The strategy is not the plan, it is the seed or embryo of your plan. Your Goal is what you want to win. Your Strategy shows how you are going to win; and your plan shows where and when each segment and phase of the strategy will happen.

Self-determination is your power to make your own life decisions without interference from others, truly being in control of your life, including choosing and setting your own goals. Self-determination means you have the power and the right to choose and decide what you will do with your life and with whom you will do it.

Determination involves persevering towards a difficult goal in spite of obstacles and is very important because it enables you to persist in the face of difficulties, because you go ahead with faith until you achieve your goal. Determination is the inner strength that keeps you on the track toward your goals and that is why successful people act as if success or failure is totally within their control.

Self-determination and Determination are both great concepts.

Together they create the synergy that achieves success.

Be Ballistic

I am not talking about your mood, but about your intentions and goals. You must aim not too low and not too high, for your shot to reach the farthest. What you believe about yourself sets your mind to navigate your personal goals to success. If you expect too much or too little of yourself, your Mindsetting will be weak because you will not believe in yourself and you will not have enough fuel to go the distance.

You must challenge the status quo, think bigger and push past your comfort zone, but you need to feel comfortable being uncomfortable, because that’s where real growth happens. That is, don’t get to the point of feeling uncomfortable for going too far out of your comfort zone or feeling comfortable because you never left your comfort zone. Middle point and balance are good concepts.

Believing is a big part of success.
